Education

Matthew was born in Cambridge, England in 1979, the eldest of three children to Peter and Jenny Charlesworth. His father held a position at a mining company and as a result the family moved to South Africa and settled in Gauteng in 1983. He remained in South Africa throughout his childhood, attending school at De La Salle Holy Cross College Primary, Selly Park Convent Primary and Christian Brothers' College (CBC) Pretoria, Mount Edmund before matriculating at St Stithians College in 1996. After a short Rotary Exchange Scholarship to Belgium, Matthew went to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where he studied Information Systems at Rhodes University. After discerning his vocation he entered the Society of Jesus and has since been engaged in the traditional Jesuit Formation, studying Philosophy at the University of London's Heythrop College and Theology at Catholic University of Eastern Africa's Hekima College, and Regis College at the University of Toronto's Toronto School of Theology. He has also taught English, Mathematics and Computer Science in highschools in South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania. After ordination in 2016, he served his curacy at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Braamfontein, Johannesburg before re-joining the Jesuit Institute South Africa in 2018.
